Many in the area experienced graupel, or small hail, during this afternoon’s rain showers.

Unlike hail or sleet, graupel is soft and can fall apart easily in the hand. It’s also usually smaller than hail.

Cooler conditions with chances of rain and snow will remain through Saturday, but warmer weather is on the way next week, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Rain showers are likely tonight through 2 a.m., then rain and snow showers will be likely, with thunder possible overnight. Temperatures will fall to around 34 degrees. Little to no snow accumulation is expected. Sensitive vegetation will be at risk, especially Saturday night into Sunday morning, the NWS said.

Rain and snow showers are expected Saturday, which should become all rain after 11 a.m. Thunder is also possible. It will be cloudy with a high near 43 degrees. It also will be breezy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected before 8 p.m., followed by isolated showers between 8 and 10 p.m. Overnight, patchy frost is likely after 4 a.m. Otherwise, it will be cloudy and gradually become partly cloudy with a low around 31 degrees.

Sunday begins a gradual warmup. After patchy frost before 9 a.m., it will be dry and sunny with a high near 59 degrees. Overnight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 46 degrees and a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m.

On Monday, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m., then a chance for showers through 2 p.m. followed by a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Although a wet day, it will be partly sunny and much warmer with a high near 70 degrees.

High temperatures are expected remain in the lower to mid-70s throughout the workweek.
